Amoxicillin
Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used for chest, ear, throat, dental and urinary infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
What Amoxicillin is used for
Chest infections, ear infections, sinusitis, dental abscess, urinary tract infection and H. pylori eradication.
How it works
It prevents bacteria from building their cell walls, so the growing bacteria rupture and die.
Side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea and rash. Allergic reactions can be serious in penicillin-sensitive people.
Precautions
Prescription only. Tell your doctor about any penicillin allergy. Always finish the full course even if you feel better, to avoid resistance.
Amoxicillin — common questions
Why must I finish the whole antibiotic course?
Stopping early leaves the hardiest bacteria alive, which lets the infection return and encourages antibiotic resistance. Complete the course exactly as prescribed.
