Atorvastatin
Atorvastatin lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is usually taken long term alongside diet and lifestyle changes.
What Atorvastatin is used for
High cholesterol, prevention of cardiovascular disease, and after a heart attack or stroke.
How it works
It blocks HMG-CoA reductase, the liver enzyme that makes cholesterol, which also makes the liver clear more LDL from the blood.
Side effects
Muscle aches, headache, digestive upset. Rarely, significant muscle or liver problems.
Precautions
Prescription only. Report unexplained muscle pain or weakness promptly. Avoid large amounts of grapefruit juice.
Atorvastatin — common questions
Should statins be taken at night?
Atorvastatin has a long duration of action, so it works at any consistent time of day. Shorter-acting statins such as simvastatin are better taken in the evening.
