Cetirizine
Cetirizine is a once-daily antihistamine for allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and hives. It causes far less drowsiness than older antihistamines.
What Cetirizine is used for
Hay fever, dust and pet allergies, allergic rhinitis, chronic urticaria (hives) and itching.
How it works
It blocks H1 histamine receptors, preventing histamine released during an allergic reaction from triggering swelling, itching and mucus production.
Side effects
Mild drowsiness in some people, dry mouth, headache or fatigue.
Precautions
Reduce the dose in kidney impairment. Avoid alcohol, which increases drowsiness, and be cautious before driving until you know how it affects you.
Cetirizine — common questions
Does cetirizine make you sleepy?
It is far less sedating than older antihistamines, but around one in ten people still feel mildly drowsy. Taking it in the evening usually solves this.
