Metformin
Metformin is the standard first-line medicine for type 2 diabetes. It lowers blood glucose without causing weight gain and rarely causes hypoglycaemia on its own.
What Metformin is used for
Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes in selected patients, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
How it works
It reduces glucose production by the liver and improves how sensitive muscle and fat tissue are to insulin, so the body uses its own insulin more effectively.
Side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, metallic taste and abdominal discomfort, especially in the first weeks. These usually settle and are reduced by the extended-release form.
Precautions
Requires a prescription. Kidney function must be checked before starting and periodically after. It is paused before contrast-dye scans and during serious illness.
Metformin — common questions
Why does metformin upset the stomach?
Metformin changes glucose handling in the gut, which commonly causes nausea or loose stools at first. Taking it with food, starting at a low dose, or switching to the extended-release form usually resolves it.
Do I need a prescription for metformin in Pakistan?
Yes. Metformin is a prescription-only medicine. Upload a valid prescription and our pharmacist will verify it before dispensing.
