Omeprazole
Omeprazole reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces. It is used for acid reflux, heartburn and stomach ulcers, and to protect the stomach during long-term anti-inflammatory treatment.
What Omeprazole is used for
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, heartburn, stomach and duodenal ulcers, and H. pylori eradication as part of combination therapy.
How it works
It irreversibly blocks the proton pumps in the stomach lining that secrete acid, which lowers acidity for around 24 hours per dose.
Side effects
Headache, nausea, wind, diarrhoea or constipation. Long-term use may affect magnesium and vitamin B12 levels.
Precautions
Take 30 to 60 minutes before a meal, usually breakfast. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease or are taking clopidogrel, methotrexate or warfarin.
Omeprazole — common questions
When is the best time to take omeprazole?
Take it 30 to 60 minutes before your first meal of the day. Proton pumps are most active after eating, so dosing before food gives the best acid control.
How long does omeprazole take to work?
Some relief often comes within 24 hours, but full benefit usually takes two to four days of regular dosing.
